About Moonty

Nanjing doesn't get the attention it deserves.

Most travelers pass through on their way between Beijing and Shanghai — a quick stop to see the Ming Tombs, maybe the city wall, then back on the high-speed train. What they miss is the city underneath: the alleyways behind Confucius Temple where grandmothers sell sesame cakes from carts, the rooftop bars on Deji Plaza where locals watch the Yangtze glow at dusk, the neighborhoods in Gulou that look exactly the same as they did forty years ago.

Nanjing has been the capital of six dynasties. It has stories in every brick. You just need someone to tell them to you.

Why we built Moonty

We're a small team of Nanjing locals who got tired of watching tourists leave the city thinking it was fine, but not feeling anything. The problem wasn't the city. It was the tours — scripted, rushed, and designed for crowds. Moonty connects you directly with local guides who actually live here. Not tour operators. Not agency staff reading from a script. Real people who eat at these restaurants, walk through these parks on weekends, and care deeply about how you experience their city.

Who our guides are

Every guide on Moonty is handpicked. Some are history teachers who moonlight as storytellers. Some are food writers who'll take you to the noodle shop they've been going to since college. Some are architects who see the city's layers in ways most people never notice. What they share: they grew up here or chose to stay here, they speak English well enough to share what they love, and they genuinely want to change how you see Nanjing.
